An Awakening to the Name of Goulty
As far back as I can remember I often wondered where I came from. I knew I was the eldest son of my father and mother, but where did they come from, and also my grandparents whom I never knew? I asked my father about his father, and I cannot recall that he said very much. He merely said that the Goulty family originally came from Norfolk. I did not then know where Norfolk was. Apart from my father, mother and brother Jim, I did not know of any other Goultys. There were just the four of us alone in Southampton, with this rather curious and unusual surname. Surely, I pondered, we could not be the only Goultys in the whole world? This curiosity about my origin lay dormant until 1950, when at the age of twenty-five an event occurred that sowed the seed of genealogical inquiry, and that has been my hobby ever since. How it Started
In 1950, I was in the third year of my architectural studies in London, when I was approached by an elderly acquaintance who had for many years been paying a penny a week for a life insurance policy for a long lost and almost forgotten distant relative.
